In the attempt to go green many people are looking at better ways to get from one place to another without the use of a gas guzzling vehicle. It might sound impossible but it really just takes some creativity, time and a little investigative work. Automobiles have become something that we rely on much too heavily. It’s a dependence that many mistakenly believe can never be broken. But some eco-friendly people are learning that there is much more to transport than cars alone.

One of the first and most obvious alternatives to driving is walking. Many people that live within walking distance of work or school still make the choice to drive simply because it is faster and more convenient. Those people need to challenge themselves to take a step toward a brighter future. Walking means that you can leave the car at home which in turn will save you gas and money. There is nothing wrong with getting some exercise on the way to work.

If you have a bicycle or a pair of rollerblades, you can avoid a lengthy walk and still leave the car at home. A bicycle with mountain bike tires can be used in the winter and it will cost much less than running your car all season. Using your rollerblades is perfect for the summer and it allows you to get a breath of fresh air at the same time.

vices. Contact your city officials to find out if this is something they will be doing. If not, ask them why. All it takes is one person to get the ball rolling when it comes to change. Don’t be afraid to take an idea like that to your city council. You never know what might come of it.

Some taxi services are also going green. There is one service currently available called the Green Chauffeur. Look them up to see if they service your area. If not, ask if they will be doing so in the future. Taking a green taxi might not always be the cheapest way to travel but it’s another great green alternative.

Look into telecommuting via the internet rather than physically going to work. Many jobs can be done from the comforts of home. If you travel many miles just to sit at a desk and a computer, talk to your employer about working from home. Even part time will make a huge difference overall in how much you drive.

If you only need to run to the corner store for some milk, take the kids or the dog for a walk. Leave the car at home because it simply is not worth it to start it up and drive a few blocks. You will feel better about yourself and your choice to be part of the solution rather than only part of the problem.

If you absolutely have to drive to work, look into joining a carpool group. Imagine the difference it could make if you catch a ride with someone going the same way instead of taking a whole separate car.
